The Commandment

  • The Presumptuous Sin – A deliberate defiance of God’s word which reproaches Him (vs. 30) and despises His word (vs. 31; Deut. 29:19-20).
  • The Problem – It is a problem of the heart (vs. 39; 2 Pet. 2:10; Jude 8).
  • The Punishment – Presumptuous sin was to be punished by death (vs. 30, 21).

The Case

  • The Sticks – A man was found gathering sticks on the Sabbath (vs. 32; Exo. 20:8; 35:3; 31:18; Deut. 9:10; Exo. 35:1; 16:26; 20:9-11).
  • The Sentence – After being held in custody, the Lord delivered his sentence (vs. 33-35).
  • The Stoning – The sentence was carried out as Israel stoned the man (vs. 36).

 

The Calling

  • The Requirement – God instructed Israel to put fringes with blue riband on their garments (vs. 38).
  • The Reminder – The fringes and blue riband was to be a reminder to Israel (vs. 39-40).
  • The Reason – God gave them this reminder and wanted them to be holy because they were His people (vs. 41; cf. 1 Cor. 6:19-20; Heb. 10:28-29).

Gratitude’s Command
(Luke 17:17-18)

  • The Responsibility – God commands us to be people of gratitude (Eph. 5:4; Col. 3:16; 1 Tim. 2:1-2).
  • The Realm – Gratitude is to extend into every area of our lives (1 Thess. 5:18; Phil. 4:6; James 4:3; Eph. 5:20; Heb. 13:15).
  • The Reasons – We are to be grateful because of the source (James 1:17) and the salvation (Col. 1:12).

Chance Hicks – The Valley of Hinnom


  • Its Place – A small valley southwest of Jerusalem (cf. Josh. 15:8).
  • Its Perimeter – Served as a border between Benjamin and Judah (cf. Josh. 18:16; Josh. 15:8).
  • Its Paganism – The valley is often connected with paganism and idolatry (Jer. 32:35; 1 Kings 11:7-8; Jer. 7:31; 2 Chr. 28:3; 2 Chr. 33:6; 2 Kings 23:10).
  • Its Prophet – Jeremiah mentions this valley 5x in his book (Jer. 7:31-32; Jer. 19:2,6; Jer. 32:35); it would be called the valley of slaughter (Jer. 19:6, 11; 7:32).
  • Its Picture – The garbage dump of Jerusalem which Jesus used to illustrate the harshness of hell.
